Preserving History Through the Lens: A Look Back at Zhouzhuang Through Feng Liu's Street Photography

Tucked away just 50 miles from the busy city of Shanghai is the tranquil water town of Zhouzhuang. With its serene canals and rich ancient architecture, this town stands as a symbol of China's deep cultural roots. Over 900 years old, Zhouzhuang is more than just a destination; it’s a live canvas of history. However, like many historic locales, it is under threat from modernization that often disregards traditional ways of life.

More than 25 years ago, I was invited to Zhouzhuang to capture its enduring beauty and celebrate its heritage. What began as a photographic project turned into a profound personal discovery of culture, history, and human stories.

Looking back on that journey, I am reminded of the vital role street photography plays in preserving our past.

The Beauty of Zhouzhuang

Zhouzhuang is famous for its enchanting landscapes, narrow alleys, and ancient homes built during the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
